Anyone can do it!

Snorkeling trips are open to all—no certifications or experience required!

Freedive without the hassle of bulky gear.

Snorkeling is preferred over scuba diving because it’s more inviting for the sharks! Elusive shark species like hammerheads can be spooked by a scuba diver’s bubbles.

Our philosophy

Alex Carrier, the owner and primary dive guide for XELA Expeditions, has operated shark snorkeling trips for over ten years without incident.

Alex has crafted a more authentic, non-invasive approach to shark snorkeling that allows guests to encounter sharks in their natural state.

Without the use of hand-feeding, our operation is designed to eliminate risk and habituation of the sharks, all while using the best techniques and conditions to spot fully wild and critically endangered great hammerheads.

The snorkel zone

The snorkel zone is comprised of a line drifting off the side of the boat with a buoy at the end.

Everyone holds onto the line and floats along the surface to observe sharks, allowing guests to be in a compact, controlled environment that the guides can easily work around.

Remaining in one area increases the chances of encountering rare, shy sharks while increasing the comfort of the guests.

Additional measures

Everyone is required to wear a dark wetsuit and gloves to cut down on contrast in the water and dull the electrical impulses our bodies give off.

We provide a mask, snorkel, fins, and gloves. Dark, long sleeve wetsuits can be affordably rented from The Kyalami Scuba Club.

Through our methods, we create a controlled environment that maximizes sightings of rare sharks and other wildlife, while making safety our top priority.
