The Big Shark Drift Expedition takes place on the XELA Expeditions vessel, Ghost Drifter. This 31ft vessel was built to be eco-friendly and has one of the lowest fuel consumptions for its size. The small footprint of this vessel minimizes the interference with some of the more shy marine species and provides a more natural interaction with the animals.
The Big Shark Drift Expedition is a half day trip, that focuses on finding and interacting with some of the more elusive shark species such as: great hammerheads and tiger sharks. These sharks are highly migratory, but can be seen in the area starting late January to early May. This trip can be booked for either the morning or afternoon, and will last for about 6 hours. After departing from the dock, we will set off into the blue to search for these giants that we are lucky enough to have right here in our backyard! This half day trip will consist of multiple dives. Depending on conditions, your trip will either start or end with about an hour long classic shark drift. On this dive, we will be in the water with some of our more commonly seen local shark species. From there, we will move to more remote and targeted areas, and begin our search for some hammerhead and tiger sharks using some specialized techniques that we have developed over many years. Due to our unique approach, we are the only free dive/snorkel boat in the area (that does not require dive certifications), that is able to get these sharks to the surface on a regular basis. This makes these elusive sharks accessible to any one regardless of their experience level. The total water time for this dive will average around one and a half to two hours and we will patiently drift with the current and see what we can find. Encounters with these animals make for a unique and memorable experience. This expedition is perfect for those who would like the possibility of encountering some rarely seen animals and may require some patience as we drift and wait to see what appears.
